The contest "Bone Marrow: Factory of Life" aimed to teach children on the importance of the registry as a bone marrow donors
The contest created by the Histocompatibility Center of North of Portugal (bone marrow registration center) was, is and will be a brilliant and clever way to teach children and it will have an unmatchable return.
To be able to participate in the "competition", students of various ages had to search for and select information about bone marrow:
- What is it?
- Why is bone marrow needed?
- Who can be saved?
- Who can be a donor?
- What diseases can it heal?
They had to search information to formulate their opinion. Myths about transplantation and donation are being dissipated.
The stigma associated with the resgistry is being broken down in the younger people.
The younger generations are laying the foundation for an altruist future, where an informed society will not be afraid of donation.
99 tile panels created by children from 10 till 18 y.o. were the result of the contest. The book published can be downloaded here (PDF 5Mb). There is also the possibility of placing your order by email: chnorte(at)chnorte.min-saude.pt. Each book can be ordered for Eur. 10,00 + post.
